İBB continues its efforts in every period of the year to keep the Golden Horn, one of the symbols of Istanbul, clean. In Haliç, where the color change was experienced with the proliferation of phytoplankton, these images were left behind and it was understood that there was no pollution. While the same situation is now happening in Elmalı Dam Lake, he said that the cause of the change in ISKI is algae, not pollution, "Istanbul city water is of world-class and potable quality."
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) works regularly to prevent pollution in the Golden Horn, one of the most important elements of the unique geography of the city. Transactions carried out at the point that the world calls “the golden horn” are carried on throughout the year without a break. Providing information about the activities carried out in the Golden Horn, İBB Head of Environmental Protection and Control Department. Dr. Ayşen Erdinçler said, “We are constantly scanning with one Kazar dredging vessel, two Dökü vessels and one amphibious dredging device. The work of cleaning the Golden Horn of İBB continues uninterrupted. ” Erdinçler, for the color change that can be seen in the Golden Horn during the spring and summer months, said, “This usually takes two to three weeks. Ours was very short. After a day or two, we almost never found it again. There is no image at the moment, it has disappeared completely. ”
“A NATURAL SITUATION FOR THE GOLDEN GOLD”
Scientists also explained the situation with statements overlapping with Erdinçler. Professor at Istanbul University, Institute of Marine Sciences and Business Administration. Dr. Seyfettin Taş said that this change is the case of phytoplankton overgrowth, as İBB explained earlier. Stating that it is a natural situation for the Golden Horn, Taş said, “It may take between one and three weeks, depending on the type. In Haliç, in the same months, excessive growths occurred in different types and colors. We have relevant scientific publications. The environmental situation of the Golden Horn always has favorable conditions for such events to occur. This can sometimes be green, red, brown or different colors. Here, it is related to which pigment substance the organism contains is dominant ”.
Boğaziçi University Institute of Environmental Sciences Faculty Member Berat Zeki Haznedaroğlu also explained that the change is normal with the following sentences:
“The weather is very hot and there is plenty of sun. That's why their number has increased. Some may take several months. For example; The turquoise phenomenon in the throat can take a little longer, about three months. The situation in the Golden Horn will probably disappear in a month. Everyone will observe this. ”
“WE CONTINUE THE DISPOSAL PROCESS WITHIN THE YEAR WITHOUT RANGE”
IMM Marine Services Manager İlker Aslan shared details about the works that are going on in every period of the year to keep the Golden Horn clean. Aslan said, “We conduct studies at the points needed by making our bathymetric (bottom depth) measurements and determinations. We continue the disposal of the mud that we have removed from the bottom throughout the year. ”
Aslan, firstly, by analyzing the bottom of the Golden Horn, at which points teressubat (precipitate) accumulation, at which points there was a deposit of mud, they determined that they started the process. "We enter the points determined by the Dökü and Kazar ships and remove the mud after the determinations," Aslan said, emphasizing that this process continues throughout the year.
WE SEND THE MUD DIRECTLY TO DISPOSAL
Speaking about the disposal of the collected sludge, Aslan said, “The mud extracted from the bottom is transferred to the mud pontoons and spill ships and sent to Eyüp. Dewatering process begins in Eyüp. According to the occupancy rate, sealed sludge is transferred to trucks and sent directly to disposal ”. Stating that there are one Kazar, two Dökü and mud pontoons, Aslan stated that they aim to extract around 60 to 100 cubic meters of sludge with a truck in a day, and that they plan to send a total of 400-450 cubic meters of sludge per day to disposal.

ISKI, a subsidiary of IMM, also made a statement about the color change in Elmali Dam Lake. The statement of İSKİ, which says that there has been a periodic color change in Elmalı just like in Haliç, is as follows:
“Elmalı Dam is as important as our other dams, although it is the lowest source of raw water that provides water to Istanbul in terms of annual yield. Also; The water flowing from the taps in Istanbul is not supplied directly from dams or raw water sources, but from modern drinking water treatment plants. Waters taken from underground and aboveground sources; After treatment, such as removal of hardness, providing disinfection, making it suitable for health conditions, it is delivered to consumers by being given to the city network.
The reason of the image alleged to cause uneasiness in the Elmalı Dam; algae, which are often encountered in the summer season. Algae that are not considered as pollution; They are entirely naturally occurring creatures that can have different colors and disappear after some time without the need for outside intervention. This situation; The water produced in our drinking water treatment facilities has no negative impact on the quality of the chemical and microbiological aspects. Istanbul's city water supply; It is in good quality, healthy and drinkable criteria that comply with the regulations on Humanitarian Consumption Water published by the European Union, World Health Organization, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Ministry of Health. ”
