The railway transportation, which was started to be used towards the last years of the Ottoman State, was not under the supervision of the Ottoman State at that time, but was maintained by the rich people with the principle of build and operate. Later, with a law enacted with the declaration of the Republic, the railways passed into the hands of the state. With this situation, many train stations were built and many private stations left from the Ottoman times were taken over by the state and were restored. There are many railway stations, some of which are still in use and some are tired, that have come from the dusty pages of history to the present day. In this article, we will present 10 historical train stations that have come from the depths of history to the present day.
1. Alsancak Station - İzmir
The first station built in Anatolia is Izmir Alsancak Station, the construction of which started in 1858 and completed in 1861. The building, which has experienced many changes and renovations since its construction, has both a station and a hospital and administrative building. It shows a feature with the sema seen in many stations in Europe.
2. Basmane Station - İzmir
Located in the Basmane district of Izmir, this station was designed in the stages after the construction of the Izmir line. The front of the station, which has a large entrance hall and a rectangular and symmetrical plan scheme, consists of cut stones. During the construction, round and flat arches were used instead of pointed arches. Basmane Train Station is built on three floors and the upper floor operates as a lodging. The upper part of the platforms in Basmane Station, which has a nostalgic atmosphere, is covered with steel covers.
3. Haydarpaşa Station - Istanbul
When it comes to history and railways, Haydarpaşa Train Station comes to mind first. The most glorious of all station buildings available in Turkey is arguably the Haydarpaşa Train Station. Almost all of the stations built in Europe after its construction were influenced by Sirkeci Station architecture. Sirkeci Station is planned as a rectangle and has a tower at each entrance. In its architecture, classical Ottoman period domes and heavier head decorations were used.
5. Konya Station - Konya
Konya Station, which is planned as a rectangle, has a two-storey entrance area that opens outwards, also has a structure reminiscent of Ankara and Eskişehir Station buildings. Again, in general, the plan it has is in harmony with Malatya, Kayseri and Kırklareli station buildings. Only brick, stone and wood materials were used in the construction of the Konya Station. The station has a wooden roof.
6. Adana Station - Adana
Even though Adana Station is similar to many stations built in the same period, it also has some differences. It does not have an architecture that will be emphasized on the outside like other stations built during the entrance part of the station, but it has a unique style with the buttresses made with wooden materials. Adana Station is located in the center of the city with its main building, lodgings and workshops where train maintenance and repairs take place. Gar, which was completed in 1912, has a nostalgic atmosphere.
7. Edirne Station - Edirne
Edirne Station, which is easily seen to be inspired by Sirkeci Station in its architecture, was designed by Architect Kemalettin Bey, one of the important architects in our history. Edirne Station, which was built in 1910 and opened to service, is currently used as the rectorate building. It has a building where we can see the breezes of traditional Turkish architecture. With the crown door at its entrance, Gar has emerged as a product of simple stone work, far from exaggeration.
8. Ankara Gazi Station - Ankara
Among the station buildings in our country, Ankara Gazi Station also occupies a special position. The station, which was designed by Burhanettin Tamcı, another important architect in our country, was completed in 1926. Ankara Gazi Station has an important place since it is the first example of the national architecture period for our country. Unlike the others, traditional motifs show a face in the construction of the station, which has a square planned entrance area. The facade of the station building is decorated with Kütahya tiles and a magnificent visuality is brought to the fore.
9. Historical Ankara Station - Ankara
New Ankara Station, which was named as the new station since it was the last station in Ankara, was built between 1935 and 1937 by Mimar Ş. It was designed by Akalın. The station, which has an entrance partition with a height of about three floors, also has two symmetrical side sections planned. The building, which has a monumental column arrangement, has an extension towards east and west directions. The New Ankara Train Station, which is still in use in the Ulus district, which is the center of Ankara, is also home to new high speed train services.
10. Kayseri Station - Kayseri
Kayseri Railway Station, the construction of which was completed in 1933, is one of the monumental station buildings that bear the first national architectural period. The station, which has a rectangular plan scheme, also houses lodgings. Kayseri Station Building completely reflects that period in terms of structure. Kayseri Station, whose entrance space is made of marble, has the best building example of Ottoman decorative elements reflected today.
