Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer, participated in the World Policy Forum of the Global Solutions Initiative, which operates as the think tank of the G20. In his speech on the internet, Soyer said, "The global epidemic has shown us once again that cities should play a more important role in global cooperation and governance, and that international organizations should renew their structures accordingly."

At the meeting held online, President Soyer said, “The global epidemic has shown us once again that cities should play more important roles in global cooperation and governance, and that international organizations should renew their structures accordingly. Only in this way can we reach a sustainable future with a higher quality of life.” The World Policy Forum is held with high-level participation in order to prepare for the G20 summit, which brings together the leaders of the world's 20 largest economies, and to create the content of the meetings to be held at this summit.

Cities Should Be More Central

In his speech, President Soyer stated that global problems such as coronavirus epidemic, global warming and loss of biodiversity threaten humanity and the world, and that sustainable urbanization is the most important global application area to combat these limitless threats. Pointing out the importance of cities reaching their potential as actors of both regional and sustainable development, Soyer said, “My hometown Izmir is a historical and important port city on the shores of the Mediterranean. It has always been at the intersection of sea and roads. Its connection and interaction with different cities and people of the world throughout history has made İzmir a rich city. The lesson we draw from the experiences of İzmir is that for a better and brighter future, cities should increase their international cooperation. ” Soyer concluded his words: “Sustainable urbanization is vital for our world and can only be achieved by establishing more effective international collaborations. Cities should have a more central place in world governance, rather than being on the sidelines. ”

Heads of state, ministers, academics from the world's leading universities, and executives of international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank came together online at the forum. Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyerbecame the only mayor invited to the World Policy Forum. In addition to Soyer from Turkey, the Minister of Treasury and Finance Berat Albayrak also attended the forum.
