Metropolitan Underground Railway

With the opening of the Metropolitan Underground Railroad on January 10, 1863, the railroad age reached a new level when the train started operating at unprecedented depths under the streets of London.

The world's first subway was operated on a 6km long line connecting the financial district of the city with Paddington Station, and the train, with more than 30.000 passengers, boarded wooden cars illuminated by gas lamps towed by steam locomotives. London Underground proved the effectiveness of public transportation and paved the way for British capital, easing the traffic of horse-drawn carriages in the city.
