Steam trains began with the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester railroad in September 1830. Before the steam train was invented, most trains were animal powered and used to transport coal and similar cargo over short distances.
The 50km rail link connecting Liverpool and Manchester made its first voyage, creating passenger and freight transport with steam locomotives designed by the winner of the rail open design competition, George Stephenson. The Liverpool-Manchester railway trains, which can travel 45 km per hour, carried more than 500.000 passengers in the first year, and profited investors. The railroad carrying cotton from Liverpool port to the Manchester factories led to the development of Britain's Industrial Revolution.
