The responsibility of the Konak Tunnel was transferred from the General Directorate of Highways to Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. The tunnel uses an average of 1 million 200 thousand motor vehicles per month, when schools are open.

The operation and maintenance responsibility of the Konak Highway Tunnel, which connects İzmir Konak Square and Yeşildere Avenue, was transferred from the General Directorate of Highways to Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. The tunnel, which is 1674 meters long, consists of two tubes: departure and arrival. The tunnel is using an average of 1 million 200 thousand motor vehicles per month when the schools are open, and 900 thousand motor vehicles during the holiday periods.

Konak Tunnel Operation Chief has been established within the Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department, which took over the responsibility of the tunnel as of January 1, 2020. The 20-person unit under the direction of the tunnel chief serves as an electrical-electronic engineer, mechanical engineer, electrical-electronic technician and technicians, office workers and emergency personnel.

What are the duties of Konak Tunnel Management Chief?

The Tunnel Chief serves 7/24. The team works with the shift system. The control center constantly monitors traffic. Regular maintenance of electrical, electronic and mechanical systems is performed. Possible malfunctions are intervened immediately. In addition, chief responsibilities include interruption of traffic in emergency situations, lane closure and preparation for various emergency scenarios. Control, safety and cleaning of warning signs, fire cabinets, sidewalks, transition between two tubes and emergency buttons are among the duties of the chief.

Occupational health and safety experts working in İZUM Branch Directorate support the personnel by taking precautions in this regard. Experts also give training to the personnel on occupational health and safety.

Software Unit will be installed

Stating that the tunnel business is running smoothly, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department Head Mert Yaygel said, “Our existing units are working with utmost care. We also plan to create a Tunnel Software Unit for safer traffic flow. This unit will carry out studies on the constant updating and development of all software and hardware both in the tunnel and operating facilities. ”

Konak Highway Tunnel was built by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and was put into service on 24 May 2015.
