Cahit Turhan, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, stated that they have started the Carbonless Airport Project and said that they aim to leave a more livable world to the next generations and provide sustainable airport management by taking precautions against global warming and climate change.
Minister Turhan gave information about the activities carried out in order to control the possible environmental impacts of the ongoing activities at the airports.
Expressing that they have started the Carbonless Airport Project against global warming in this context, Turhan said, “With the project, we aim to leave a more livable world to future generations and provide sustainable airport management with the measures taken against global warming and climate change.” said.
Turhan stated that the airport-generated carbon emissions causing global warming will be calculated in accordance with international standards and verification procedures will be completed.
Turhan pointed out that renewable energy investments and the use of electric vehicles in airports are aimed to be used in line with the principle of efficient use of energy.
Turhan continued: “The project will cover all airports. In addition to applying the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program conducted by the International Airports Council with pilot airports to be determined by our General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ) in order to bring international identity to the project, renewable energy sources in the market in addition to the calculation, verification and reduction activities. carbonless emissions will be 'offset' and carbon-free airport management will be achieved by obtaining certificates. ”
Measures to prevent waste generation are planned
Turhan emphasized that measures will be taken to prevent waste generation in line with the principle of zero waste at the airports, and that the collected ones can be collected separately at their source and sent to recycling as high as possible, and that the rest will be disposed of under appropriate conditions.
Turhan stated that the wastewater will be given to the infrastructure facilities of the municipalities within the scope of environmental legislation, or it will be treated and discharged with the wastewater treatment facilities installed at the airports, and said, “These will be followed up with necessary analyzes. The noise maps of each airport will be updated. With the committees formed at the airports, measures for noise reduction will be discussed. ” said.
Turhan gave the information that the chemicals that emerged from the anti-icing / de-icing activities during winter months would be collected separately with the installed infrastructure without being mixed with the soil and said:
“While all these processes are being carried out, they will be documented under the Environmental Management System. Continuity will be ensured by monitoring and auditing by competent personnel at determined periods.
