Atkins, a LNC-Lavalin group subsidiary, signed a contract to provide detailed design and construction support for the 300km Varberg tunnel in Sweden as part of a project to double the 3.1 km West Coast Line between Gothenburg and Lund.

The new 3.1 km tunnel, the coastline, Varberg will work to enable the West Coast Line to expand into a double track railway, which will increase capacity for passenger and transport services and reduce travel times. The first phase of the project, which includes the development of the implementation plan, completed its design. The next stage includes detailed planning for the construction phase of the new tunnel and the first £ 1 million material contract.

The expansion of the railway has been going on since 2015, and about 85 percent of the West Coast Line has been raised. The project, led by the Swedish Transport Administration and the Swiss construction company Implenia, is expected to be completed in 2025.

"The Varberg tunnel and the line expansion will benefit the entire western coast of Sweden by connecting towns, cities, businesses and communities," said Johannes Erlandsson, CEO of Atkins Sweden. Since its initial stages, we have been working with our partners to provide this complex and transformative project. “Atkins is working on a number of railway projects, including the 250km East Link Project, a 160km / h high speed line from Järna to Linköping in Sweden; City of Hallsberg; Electric direct connection to the port of Gavle and the electrification of the port line from the freight garden to the new train station and the expansion of the Railway from Tomteboda and Kallhäll to two in four in Stockholm.
