About Gayrettepe Istanbul Airport Metro Project

Located in the junction of the Asian and European continents, in Istanbul, parallel to population growth, labor force and growing country economy, urban, intercity and international modern and easily accessible transportation needs arise. The capacities of the existing Atatürk and Sabiha Gökçen airports in Istanbul are becoming insufficient with each passing day against increasing domestic and foreign passenger demand. For this reason, the “Istanbul New Airport”, the foundation of which was laid on June 7, 2014, is being built on the European side of Istanbul, between the Yeniköy and Akpınar villages, with six independent runways. The first phase of the airport was put into service on October 29, 2018.

Considering an airport with a passenger capacity at this scale and other living centers to be built around it, it is inevitable to support the region by public transportation. The 3rd Airport Rail System Line is one of the most important metro lines planned to be built on the European side of Istanbul. With this line, it will be ensured that the city will integrate with the city's major public transport hubs and city rail systems in a way that provides fast and comfortable access to the 3rd Airport. Total length is approx. 70 kilometers The length of the line that will be in the direction of Gayrettepe- 3rd Airport is approximately 37,5 kilometers, 3rd Airport-Halkalı The direction is designed as 32 kilometers. Contract of Gayrettepe Istanbul New Airport Metro Line from these lines 07.12.2016, Istanbul New Airport - Halkalı The contract of the Metro Line was signed on 07.03.2018, and manufacturing started on the site.
