Turkey's Antarctic expedition held that the countdown has begun for the 4th science. Before the expedition, which will start on February 9, a team of 24 was given a “survival” training on the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Ship. Participants who completed their education and received their certificates will carry out scientific studies in 15 different areas, especially in climate change and maritime research, in strategic and important regions of the White Continent Antarctica.
CONSULTANT COUNTRY STATUS
The presidential patronage, Industry and Technology Ministry vested in and TUBITAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) Polar Research will be carried out in coordination with the Institute 4. National Antarctic Science Expedition with Turkey, the Antarctic Treaty's system at present as an observer "consultant country" a step closer to the goal of transition status.
RECEIVED THE CERTIFICATES
The team, who was informed about the dangerous situations that they may encounter during their travel time and duties and their solutions, completed their trainings and received their certificates.
EVERY RISK AND DETAIL POSSIBLE
Within the scope of the trainings carried out, the team, who has experience in expedition to Antarctica, was transferred to the entire team under the leadership of experts in the field, to stay alive at sea, fire prevention, fire fighting, communication at sea and basic first aid information. Within the scope of the training, the 'leave the ship' drill was carried out with the worst scenario in mind. The team, which also performed the landing and exiting of the ship's boats with rope ladders called the cross, and the injuries were also informed about the intervention.
THEY SHOULD IN THE ISLAND
The team of 24 people, who are ready for the task by completing their survival training, will fly to Brazil first on Friday, February 9, and then join the ship from Chile. The team will anchor on Horseshoe Island, where the Temporary Turkish Science Camp is stationed, and will work with helicopters and boats. Staff of the Naval Forces will conduct a seabed mapping study, scientists will collect microscopic algae from the island of Horseshoe and its shores, and the findings will be biotechnologically evaluated.
FATMA ŞAHİN WILL ACCOMPANY
Gaziantep Metropolitan Mayor Fatma Şahin will be accompanied by the science team going to Antarctica, from the South Shetland team islands of Antarctica to King George Island. Pointing to the importance of education, Şahin said, “As a country, we need to be there, to establish our science base. We want to switch to high technology. Leadership is very important, women leadership is very important here. A woman is leading this team, we are her students, we are honored with her. ”
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN 15 DIFFERENT TOPICS
4. The National Antarctic Science Expedition team will conduct scientific research on 15 different topics, especially climate change, after reaching the place of duty. Within the scope of the project, it is also aimed to conduct scientific studies to help monitor global climate change, which is considered as the most important environmental problem of today.
HOSTED BY THE OWNER
Turkish Antarctic Science Expeditions Coordinator and TÜBİTAK MAM KARE Director Assoc. Dr. Burcu Özsoy, "9 February to 20 March 2020 at the time of the planned completion date of 22 Turkish researchers will be staying, as well as two foreign researchers and Turkey will be the host of the party on the continent for the second time. From time to obtain data and results, and will place Turkey in international research and scientific studies carried out with the name referred to. "He said.
IN TUBITAK MAM COORDINATION
4th National Antarctic Science Expedition coordinated by TÜBİTAK MAM Pole Research Institute, General Directorate of Maps, General Directorate of Meteorology, Karadeniz Technical University, Marmara University, Yıldız Technical University, Istanbul Technical University, Kırklareli University, Ege University, Istanbul Medeniyet University and Istanbul University will be carried out by scientists.
Turkish Antarctic Science Expedition Leader Dr. Ersan Başar gave information about the field studies to be carried out by the science team and said, “We will install 4 GNSS stations with a total weight of nearly 3 tons in order to increase the global accuracy of the global positioning system in the region. Samples will be collected for precious projects in geology, atmosphere and biology and measurements will be made. A medical doctor will be responsible for the health of the team during the expedition to Antarctica, which is far from basic needs such as hospitals. ”
