IETT opened an exhibition in Karaköy Tünel in memory of Ara Güler, a photographer and photojournalist who died last year.

The exhibition opened in the memory of Ara Güler, a duayen photographer at Karaköy Tünel, includes old Istanbul photographs taken by Güler and his own photographs.

The exhibition can be visited at Karaköy Tünel until the end of November between 07: 00 - 22: 45.

Who is Ara Güler?

Ara Güler was born in Istanbul in 1928. The most important representative of attentiveness gained international reputation in the field of creative photography in Turkey, in 1956, Time Life, Paris Match and Stern magazine in 1958 became the photojournalism of the Near East. In the same period, Magnum Photos started international distribution of Ara Güler photos. The British Journal of Photography Year Book, published in England in 1961, described it as one of the seven best photographers in the world. The same year, the American Society of Magazine Photographers (ASMP) was accepted and was the only member of this organization from Turkey.

Güler won the Master of Leica title in Germany in 1962. In the same year, Camera magazine, one of the most important publications in the world of photography, published a special issue about it. He took photos of Lord Kinross's book, Hagia Sophia, published in 1971. The cover photo of the book Picasso Metamorphose et Unite, prepared by Skira Publishing for Picasso's 90th birthday, belonged to Güler.

Güler's photographs on art and art history were used by Time Life, Horizon, Newsweek and Skira Publishing House. Photographs of Mimar Sinan's works, which he worked on for years, were published under the name "Sinan, Architect of Soliman the Magnificent" in 1992 by Edition Arthaud in France and "Thames & Hudson" Publishers in the USA and England.

"Lejion D'Honneur by the French government in 2002; Officier Des Arts Et Des Lettre ”was given the title of“ La Medaille de la Ville de Paris ”by the Municipality of Paris in 2009. In 2005, the Republic of Turkey Presidential Culture and Art Grand Award, the Republic of Turkey in 2008, Culture and Tourism Ministry of Culture and Arts Service Award in 2009, Grand National Assembly of Turkey Distinguished Service Award, the United States Lucie Awards Lifetime Honor Award and 2011 in Turkey Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism was deemed worthy of Culture Art Grand Prize. Güler received the title of "Honorary Doctorate" from Yıldız Technical University in 2004, from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2013 and from Boğaziçi University in 2014. Ara Güler died at the age of 17 on October 2018, 90.
