According to the first determinations, at least 50 people died in the accident that occurred in the morning in the Tanganyika region, southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, when the train derailed.

According to Reuters, Minister for Human Affairs Steve Mbikayi stated that the accident occurred three times in the morning in the town of Mayibaridi. Mbikayi stated that at least 50 people died in the accident and 23 people were injured and hospitalized.

"I present our condolences to the families of those who died in the accident on behalf of the government, and wish our victims to get past," the minister said in a statement on Twitter.

Train tracks are not well maintained in Congo, and most locomotives date back to the 1960s. Therefore, accidents in railway transportation cause serious loss of life.
