It is the institution that operates the state-owned railway services of Azerbaijan. The company was established in 1991 as Azerbaijan State Railways (Azərbaycan Tattoolət Dəmir Yolu) in place of the Soviet Railways and was renamed in 2009. It is located in central Baku.

The first railway in Azerbaijan was opened in 1880. Today, Azerbaijan Railways has 12 stations, two of which are fully automatic, 176 with container mechanisms with adapted mechanisms and machines, and three stations with high cargo containers. Railways have a total length of 1,272 km, 2,918 km of which are electrified.

Kars-Tbilisi-Baku railway briefly (ICTA), Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, which connects directly to a regional rail line. The line is called the “Iron Silk Road”.
