The construction of the third independent runway at Istanbul Airport, which consists of four stages and will be the largest in the world when all stages are completed, continues at full speed.

With the runway planned to be put into service in the second half of 2020, Istanbul Airport will be the first airport in Turkey to operate with 3 independent runways, and the second airport in Europe. With the activation of the third runway, Istanbul Airport will have 3 independent runways and 5 operational runways with spare runways.

With the new runway, the landing and take-off capacity from 80 aircraft per hour will be increased to 120. Thus, airline companies will increase their slot flexibility. Due to the location of the third runway close to the domestic terminal, the current taxi times of the aircraft will be reduced by 50 percent.

“We aim to put our three independent runways into service within the first 6 months of next year,” said Kadri Samsunlu, CEO and General Manager of İGA Airport Operations. – morning
