Gebze

Gebze (ancient names: Dakibyza and Libyssa) is a district of Kocaeli. It is one of the largest industrial cities of the Marmara Region.

History

The oldest known history of the Bitinya region, including Gebze, is XII. It dates back to the century. Kocaeli Peninsula, which is the most important gateway between Asia and the European continents, has become either a homeland of many nations or a place where they have come and passed, leaving traces of their civilization. The Phrygians made the first known nation migration in the early 12th century BC. The Phrygians, who came to the Peninsula through the Bosphorus, were scattered from here to Anatolia.

In the place where Gebze is today, there were settlements called Dakibyza and Libyssa during the period of Bithynia Kingdom under the reign of King Nicomedes I. between 281 and BC. The most important reason why these settlements are subject to research is that the famous Carthaginian commander Hannibal was settled here during the kingdom period. Hannibal was not respected in his country after his defeat in the War of Zama and had to take refuge in the Bithynia Kingdom. Hannibal's tomb is located in the Gebze TUBITAK Campus. Evliya Çelebi says that in his journey to Gebze in 1640, there were about 1000 old-style houses with gardens.

Population

According to the 1997 census results, the total population of Kocaeli province is 1.175.190 and Gebze's population is 402.916. According to the 1997 census, the district constitutes 34.28% of the total population of Kocaeli province. In 1965, while living in 33 districts in Turkey thousand of the population, this figure was 1997 per thousand in 40.2. overall population growth rate in Turkey was 1965% in the period 1997-100.8, this has been 111.8% increase in Gebze. While the population before local elections was over 2008 thousand people since 500.000, the districts of Gebze were Darıca, Çayırova and Dilovası districts and left Gebze. According to ADNK by TÜİK, Gebze district population was 2013 thousand at the end of 329.195. Gebze region population was 642.726.
