In railway statistics, train crashes are among the least common accidents. The main reason for this is that the security measures that regulate the train traffic are clearly and comprehensively defined according to the logic rules. The safety of manual systems is ensured by expert personnel who apply the defined rules in the field while most of the navigation safety is provided automatically on the lines with a signaling facility. In both cases, all train traffic is monitored and managed by the central dispatcher (train traffic controller).

More than half of the TCDD rail network does not have a signaling system. The trains on these lines are managed by a manual system called the Center for Traffic Management (TMI), train acceptance and dispatch operations are carried out with defined strict safety rules. In TMI, the dispatcher knows the location of the trains in the responsibility area and manages the traffic by taking advantage of this information. Personnel in the field have to implement the orders of the dispatcher with the same name and all radio and telephone calls are recorded.
13 December 2018 High Speed Train (YHT), which started the Ankara-Konya route at 06.30 on Thursday morning, collided head-on with a guide train coming from the opposite direction in Marşandiz station shortly after, 9 people were killed and more than 90 injured. Since there is no signaling facility where the incident occurred, the traffic is regulated manually.
The fact that two rail vehicles moving in the opposite direction meet and collide on the same line indicate that there is a serious security gap in the operation of the line. In the railway, the scissors that were used to change the train line were arranged incorrectly and the trains were collided head-on in the same line. It is not possible to make such a traffic arrangement on signaled lines. This can happen only if one of the machinists violates a red signal.
A large number of traffic safety systems have been developed and implemented in the history of railway. Initially, the manual systems evolved into systems with electrical signals along with technological developments. The main reason for these developments is to increase the train speed and train traffic over time, to provide traffic safety and to increase the line capacity to serve more trains. The first signaling system in Turkey is Sirkeci-Halkalı In line 1956 was implemented. Then, the central traffic control system (CTC) was installed in 1968 between Istanbul and Ankara. Today, approximately 44 of TCDD lines is signaled. There is a signaling system in the Ankara-Konya YHT line where the incident occurred. Rationality, adopted in the guidance of science, combined with a sense of merit and conscience, can be done more accurately.
