The critical process opened against the Izmir Bay Crossing Project, which was decided to stop execution in line with the expert reports, was entered. At the hearing of the case seen today, environmental and professional organizations demanded the cancellation of the project by drawing attention to the damage to both nature and urban culture. The decision of the court will be expected.

A lawsuit filed by the EGEÇEP, TMMOB, Doğa Association and 85 citizens against the Izmir Bay Crossing Project included in the AKP's local election declaration. In the case heard in the courtroom of the İzmir Regional Court of Justice, the damages that the project will cause to Izmir Bay were expressed and the EIA positive decision was canceled. Apart from the lawyers, the hearths of the Izmir 3rd Administrative Court also attended the managers of the EGEÇEP, TMMOB chambers, citizens, the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, bureaucrats of the General Directorate of Highways and İnciraltı 2nd Generation Platform, which was involved in the case.

EGEÇEP Lawyer Arif Ali Cangı stated that the Gulf Crossing Project contradicts the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality's project to rehabilitate the Gulf. Cangı added that Gediz Delta and İzmir Bay should be protected in order for İzmir to be a livable city and to maintain its identity. Stressing that otherwise the city will become uninhabitable, Cangı stated that there is no public interest.

Özlem Şenyol, the Head of the Izmir Branch of the Chamber of City Planners, reminded that the Gulf Crossing Project was not included in the İzmir-Manisa 100 thousand Environmental Plan and the transportation master plans prepared by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality for 2030 and stated that there was no need for the city. Geophysical Engineer Erhan İçöz, who is one of the plaintiffs, informed that there was no more than 50 meters of drilling work in the project and said, “It is not planned to happen in an earthquake with more than 6 intensity in İzmir, which is an earthquake zone. He should go down to 150 meters deep for a real transportation. ” İçöz informed that there is no archaeological investigation in the area where the bridge legs will be located.

The lawyers and bureaucrats of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and the General Directorate of Highways claimed that the EIA file is procedural and will not harm the areas it will pass. The party, who also opposed the expert report, also requested that an additional expert review and the case be dismissed.

The court will announce its decision in the coming days.
