Hong Kong Metro and Microbiome

One of the major problems of the employees living in big cities is public transportation. Especially in big cities such as Istanbul, where many people are able to access public transport and get off at work, even if it is even a separate art, many people use public transportation, especially light rail systems.

Light rail and other public transport does not only carry people. Together with hundreds of thousands of people, they carry their microbiome and the thousands of microorganisms that they leave in the vehicles.

Especially in the months when the germs are intense, they often travel in crowded public transportation vehicles where the breathing distance is full, crowded and not very well ventilated. there is almost no disease that is not exposed to diseases. A recent study on the Hong Kong subway revealed the quality of these microbiome.

Researchers gathered bacteria and yeast samples from each of the 8 lines of the Hong Kong metro, traveling in the morning, day and evening, in the vehicle, and in the 30 minute contact.

According to the results of the study, in the mornings, each line carries its own characteristic microbiome and during the day all these interfere, and in the evening, the microbiome of the transportation network becomes the same in almost all lines. Researchers found that both microorganisms and their antibiotic resistance genes were involved in the metro network and could move around freely. In the study, the presence of resistant strains in the microbiome analyzed is quite striking.

The study is very important in terms of revealing important findings about the spread of antibiotic resistance in public cities by means of public transportation and pointing out the precautions to be taken. The vehicles carrying the crowds function as hot spots where antibiotic resistance genes, where microbiomes are mixed, can be transferred from one organism to another.
