The Canal Istanbul route, which was announced in 2011 and known to the public as the crazy project, is being wondered by the citizens. The route of the Canal Istanbul Project, which was announced by Ahmet Arslan, the Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications at a press conference last January, had been determined. So where is the Kanal Istanbul route?

On January 15, 2018, the Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Ahmet Arslan, at a press conference, announced the details and the route of the Canal Istanbul project, which was announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2011, known as the “crazy project”. The speech of Minister Aslan regarding the route of the project, which he uses the expression “The biggest project of our country” is as follows;

Küçükçekmece- Sazlıdere- Durusu road, which we consider as the fourth alternative as a result of the studies in 5 routes. Our route is 45 kilometers. Its location relative to the 3rd airport was determined as the entrance from Küçükçekmece. Apart from the 125 kilometers we have completed, we connect from Kınalı to Tem on the European side, we connect to Akyazı on the Anatolian Side. Again, passing through Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, it will be on the high-speed train line. In the far south, there will be the D100 Highway route. We aim to pass 3 passages on the Marmara side under the Küçükçekmece Lake, as in Marmaray, with a sinking tube. There will be no transits requiring a viaduct since we do a splitting from Kanal Istanbul.

Studies were carried out on five alternatives. As of today, it has decided on the alternative that provides the most accurate advantageous location. Our work on the Küçükçekmece-Sazlıdere and Durusu corridor will continue. We will finish the tender processes with Build-Operate-State and hit the first excavation. Kanal Istanbul route starts from the isthmus that separates the Marmara Sea from Küçükçekmece Lake. Canal Istanbul, which will pass through Altınşehir and Şahintepe neighborhoods and continue along the Sazlıdere Dam Basin, will reach the Black Sea from the east of Terkos Lake near the Terkos and Durusu neighborhoods. The project area is within the boundaries of Arnavutköy (28,6 km), Küçükçekmece (7 km), Başakşehir (6,5 km) and Avcılar (3,1 km).
