Maximum Dimensions of Ships Passing Through Canal Istanbul

The construction phase of the Canal Istanbul Project, announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2011, reflected as a “crazy project” to the public and announced by the Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, is targeted to last about 5 years, and its minimum economic life is 100 years. .

The maximum dimensions of fuel tanker and container ships, which are among the determining factors in the design of the channel and which can pass through Kanal Istanbul, were determined.

Accordingly, the 275-meter-tall, 48-meter-wide fuel tanker is expected to carry 145 detveve tons (DWT), the 340-meter-tall and 48,2-meter-wide container ship to carry 120 DWT.

According to the information collected by the AA correspondent from the Kanal Istanbul Project Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Application File, which was put on the website of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, the route that was announced by President Erdoğan in 2011, which was reflected to the public as a “crazy project”, was the route of Transport, Maritime and Communication. The construction phase of the Kanal Istanbul Project, announced by Minister Arslan, is planned to take approximately 5 years. The minimum economic life of the channel is estimated to be 100 years, provided the necessary maintenance and renovation activities are carried out.

As part of the Canal Istanbul Project, the channel will be opened with methods and techniques to be determined after geological and geotechnical surveys carried out in an area of approximately 45 kilometers following the east of Küçükçekmece Lake-Sazlıdere Dam-Terkos. Thus, a safe alternative waterway will be created that connects the Black Sea to the Marmara and the Mediterranean.

During the determination of the dimensions of the canal, the maximum dimensions of the ships which were expected to pass through here were examined for maximum dimensions for different ship categories. In this context, the 275 meter-wide and 48 meter-wide fuel tank is expected to carry a maximum of 145 thousand DWT. The 340 meter ship and the 48,2 meter ship are planned to carry a maximum of 120 thousand DWT dead cargo.

The depth of the channel where these vessels can pass is about 25 meters. The width of the canal will vary from about 250 to a thousand meters depending on the berthing structures and maneuvering areas on the corridor.

Breakwater to be made to the channel for safety

It is planned that the channel will perform its functions in a healthy way, and breakwaters will be made for safe entry and exit of the ships in the Black Sea entrance. Control centers, guide captain offices, tug docks, lanterns will be constructed to ensure the healthy traffic course, which will ensure the continuous control of ship traffic.

Emergency response stations, emergency docks and waiting areas to be located in the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea are included in the plan in case of malfunction or accident that may occur in the channel.

In addition to the facilities and structures required for the channel operation, it is planned to build marina, container ports and logistics center to be developed to be integrated with the project.

Within the scope of the project, the islands and coastal embankment areas where the materials to be removed from the excavation works will be stored will be created.
