A unique journey on the Siberian express: One of the most impressive engineering marvels in modern history and the longest railway in the world, Trans-Siberia was completed 100 years ago. Brazilian editor Lais Oliveira shared his experiences with Sputnik about his travel on the Trans-Siberian railway.
The construction of the Trans-Siberian railway, which was started in 1891, was completed on October 5, 1916. Moving to Moscow, the capital of Russia 7 years ago, Lais Oliveria made the journey he called 'my dream' with a Russian and a Colombian friend on the 9 thousand 288-kilometer railway from Moscow to Vladivostok.
Stating that the journey scared itself a bit, Oliveria said that they traveled to Mongolia and China through the railway connecting the European part of Europe with the Far East regions.
Stating that they encountered a unique beauty everywhere during the journey, Lais Oliveria said that Yekaterinburg and Lake Baikal affected him the most.
'THERE IS NO LAYER FOR LIVING INTERACTION'
Emphasizing that they buy tickets from open compartments in order to be in touch with the local people on the journey, Oliveria said, “There is no room for boredom during the journey. Some are sleeping, reading a book, others chatting and joking or playing games. A Russian grandma we met offered us dessert and biscuits. One ex-soldier played the guitar and sang; another taught his daughter to braid hair. A man also offered us vodka, ”he said.
'WE MEETED WITH UNIQUE BEAUTY AT EVERY PHASE OF THE JOURNEY'
Stating that they encountered a unique beauty everywhere they stopped, Oliveria said that they were most impressed by two places: “The first was Yekaterinburg, this place on the border of Asia and Europe allows two places to be at the same time. The second was Lake Baikal.
Oliveria stressed that the voyage to Mongolia and China is an unforgettable experience.
