Espoo and Helsinki city administrators unanimously approved the proposed light rail express service to be established between Itäkeskus in Helsinki and Keilaniemi in Espoo in early June 2016. In spite of the support of the municipal high-level officials, the proposal must be approved by the two Municipal Councils at the end of June. After the approval of the two sides, a more detailed plan will be determined to realize the project.
This express rail named Raide-Jokeri will replace the 550 bus line by moving the country center from east to west. The project, which is planned to cost 275 million euros, envisages that the 174 million euros will be covered by the Helsinki Municipality, the 67 million-euro section will be covered by the Espoo Municipality and the 30 million-euro section will be covered by the government. This figure includes the construction of the tramway route and the modification of the road infrastructure, while the other costs are not included.

The whole project, including the road mechanism and new tramway vehicles, is expected to cost 459 million euros, while the 84 million-euro portion of this amount will be covered by the government, while the 278 million euros will be covered by the Helsinki Municipality and the 97 million euros will be covered by the Espoo Municipality.

While the construction is expected to start in 2017, the line is planned to be 25 km long. Raide-Jokeri will do 25 km per hour. With the new project, city planners are focusing on the realization of 6000 new housing projects in Helsinki and 4000 in Espoo in the coming years.
