Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge or Third Bosphorus Bridge is the third bridge under construction on the northern side of the Bosphorus facing the Black Sea. The groundbreaking ceremony of the bridge was held on May 29, 2013 with the participation of President Abdullah Gül, Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek, then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and many guests.

On March 6, 2016, with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and Minister of Transport Binali Yıldırım, the two continents united for the third time with the assembly of the last deck on the bridge.


In the tender, the Köprü and Northern Marmara Motorway Project was planned to be built with the build-operate-transfer model of Odayeri-Paşaköy and the Northern Marmara Motorway (remaining parts) with equity. The tender was postponed for 15 days due to the fact that the investment was exempt from VAT. The details of the motorway that will be built with the bridge and the bridge were processed in the 25 thousand scale development plans. However, Çorlu-Çerkezköy It was also planned to construct a third airport in the region, to open the Riva area to tourism in the northern part of the Anatolian Side, and to build a large technopark near Izmit. In addition, contrary to its predecessors, the bridge will be built by the private sector, not by the state, but by the build-operate-transfer model. In the press statement made by Minister of Transport Binali Yıldırım on April 29, 2010, it was stated that the exact route of the third bridge was between Garipçe and Poyrazköy. It was reported that the cost of the bridge, including expropriation costs and construction expenses, will be 6 billion dollars.


The construction of the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge started simultaneously in Garipçe and Poyrazköy locations where both legs of the bridge sit. The construction of the piers whose foundation was laid on 29 May 2013 was completed on 24 October 2014. Bridge piers are 330 meters above sea level and 322 meters long from the beginning of the ground.

A total of 700 people work in the project, 6500 of which are engineers. The widest tunnel in Europe with a diameter of 22 meters is also being built in the project. The weight of the decks to be used in the project is 870 tons.


Transport Minister Binali Yıldırım said the following about the latest situation of the 3rd bridge: “There is a gap of 9 meters left. We are closing that gap on Sunday. Then the resources will be made and the deficiencies will be completed. It will be possible to proceed on the bridge by walking and by vehicle ”. After the foundation laid by former President Abdullah Gül and Erdogan in 2013, an unsatisfied sight emerged for the cruise of the bridge. Viaducts also have an important place on the 3-kilometer highway built within the scope of the 116rd Bridge and Northern Marmara Motorway project. The 1460rd Bosphorus Bridge, where 24 workers and engineers work 3 hours a day, will be the widest bridge in the world when it is finished with a width of 59 meters.
