Urban transportation problems in Izmir

The problems of urban transportation in Izmir were discussed at the table: The students of Yaşar University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences) Department of International Logistics Management investigated urban transportation problems, expectations and urban activities of the citizens of İzmir. In the field study where people from different ages and occupational groups were close to 150, it was revealed that the people of İzmir were the most preferred activities to visit the shopping centers on the weekends.
In the scope of the study conducted within the scope of the city logistics course, the people of İzmir were asked about the urban activities, the options they had for their ages, their jobs, their residences, the places they worked or studied, their shopping preferences, weekends, holidays or other leisure time and the ways of accessing these activities. The participants who gave their opinions about the main transportation problems presented their solution suggestions. The findings of the study, which also offered solutions to the students of the International Logistics Management Department, were also shared with the Directorate of Transportation Planning Department of the General Directorate of ESHOT.
NOT ONLY TO USE THE RAIL SYSTEM
Yaşar University International Logistics Management Department Faculty Member Assist. Assoc. Dr. Ceren Altuntaş Vural gave information about the results of the research and solutions. Stating that the participants used İZBAN and İzmir Metro connections intensively especially during work and school transportation, the majority of them stated that they made a bus trip at the beginning or at the end to reach these connections. Assoc. Dr. Vural said, “In addition to connecting buses, it was observed that a crowded group was also dependent on minibus systems during the transportation process. In addition, as work and school transportation hours coincide with the busiest hours of the day, it was determined that the biggest problem in this process was the disconnection and capacity differences between bus systems and rail systems.

Stating that the most frequently recurring problems are the crowd in public transportation vehicles, Vural said, “Among the problems in the meetings with citizens, the long voyages in İZBAN, the inability to use sea transportation effectively and airport transportation were not available for late night flights. It was observed that the bottleneck points in İzmir transportation network are Fahrettin Altay bus and İzmir Metro transfer centers, İZBAN-Şirinyer station and Forum Bornova-İzmir Ring Road junction ”.

Stating that the most preferred activities are visiting shopping centers on weekends and free time, Yaşarlı academician said, “However, it was observed that citizens who do not have personal intermediaries also prefer neighborhood markets or local markets close to their region of residence. It was revealed that a substantial part of the participants in the study preferred urban attraction centers such as Alsancak, Bostanlı, İnciraltı, Güzelyalı coastal areas. Public transportation has given way to the use of personal vehicles both in shopping and leisure activities; It has also been observed that weekend mobility towards summer resorts directly increases the use of personal vehicles, ”he said.
RECOMMENDATIONS FROM CITIZENS
Vural, who explained the solutions offered by citizens and students, gave the following information:
“Suggestions are to increase the number of wagons for İzmir Metro and İZBAN at least during peak hours, to expand the bus stops in Üçkuyular and to transfer to Balçova and Narlıdere direction, to provide accurate information by monitoring İZBAN departure times through geographical information systems, to increase the frequency of İZBAN flights, In order to use the Üçkuyular piers more intensively, additional ferry services should be added. "
BICYCLES USERS COMPLAINT
Bike and motorcycle users complain about the insensitivity of vehicle drivers in the city, and they consider driver awareness activities as necessary. Especially in the newly developed smart boards, they welcome the messages given in this direction. One major complaint was expressed in relation to the dolmuş systems. Due to the lack of control of the dolmuş drivers, the negative attitude towards other vehicles and passengers is well established. The regular monitoring of these systems by the municipality and the necessity of violating the rules violations should be punished from the traffic.
