Railways in Izmir reach 16 million passengers per month

Rail systems in İzmir reached 16 million passengers per month: IZBAN and Izmir Metro reportedly reached 16 million passengers per month thanks to their investments and growing fleet.

It is stated that the rail systems in İzmir İZBAN and İzmir Metro have increased the number of passengers carried by increasing the number of trains and stations in the last 4 years from 6 million to 16 million.

According to the written statement made by İZBAN, İZBAN, which provides public transportation services on the north-south axis of İzmir and serves 2011 million İzmir residents per month in 3, started to carry 7 million people.

In the last 4 year-long Izmir Metro, which opened Evka-3, Fahrettin Altay, Poligon and Göztepe stations, increased the number of its passengers from the 3 million per month over the 9 million dam.

- “The fastest in the world”

Pointing out that İZBAN is one of the fastest growing suburban systems in the world, İZBAN General Manager Sabahattin Eriş stated that 63 sets are currently in operation in their fleets, and this number will increase to 73 during the year.

Expressing that around 650 thousand people travel by rail systems per day in İzmir, Eriş said, “As we increase the quality of service we offer to the people of Izmir, this number will grow further and our current 30 percent share in the public transport cake will increase to 50 percent.”

  • 30 million passengers per month

Sönmez Alev, General Manager of Izmir Metro, stated that the rail systems in İzmir have grown very rapidly in the last 4 years, and the metro line, which was 2000 kilometers in 11, reached 20 kilometers.

Stating that İZBAN is located in the center of the city on a single line of 80 kilometers and that both businesses are growing their vehicle fleet, Alev said, “The construction of 85 sets of 17 cars of İzmir Metro started. This growth trend will peak with the trams that will come into play after a while. Our prediction is that we will reach 2 million passengers a month in İZBAN and İzmir Metro within a period of 30 years ”.
