Officials of the Polytechnic University of Athens and the Greek Ministry of Culture made examinations in the area where the Plaka Bridge was destroyed within the scope of the project work. Golias, Rector of the Polytechnic University, said they had the technical knowledge to build the historic stone bridge according to the original form of the work soon. Golias stated that the university will be ready to present the project to state officials in a short time to get the work in its first form.
Evgenia Gatopulu, General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture Restoration Department, emphasized that the stone bridge is of historical and symbolic importance for both Greece and the region, and stated that the government wishes to restore the stone bridge. Gatopulu said that the Ministry of Culture had a very good cooperation with the experts of the Polytechnic University of Athens in the past on the restoration of historical monuments.
Cumerka Mayor Yannis Senteles stated that they want municipalities and citizens to start construction works in the near future.
Meanwhile, businessman Nikos Lulis stated that he will cover half of the costs of restoring the stone bridge. Nikos Lulis's grandfathers had also financed the repair work of the Plaka Bridge twice before. It was informed that the remaining restoration costs of the bridge will be covered by the Greek Ministry of Culture and the private sector.
In the western part of Greece, in the Epirus region, the water level increased due to heavy rain last week and the Plaka Bridge, a single-arch bridge built in 1886 by the Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz in the Balkans, was destroyed.
The Plaka Bridge is located on the Arahtos River between Ioannina and Arta.
