Tramway Project planned to be built in Izmir: City Planners Chamber Izmir Branch President Kocaer: "A participatory approach has not been displayed in the project on the agenda of the city"

Özlem Şenyol Kocaer, Head of Izmir Branch of the Chamber of City Planners, argued that a participatory approach was not displayed in the "tram project" on the agenda of the city, and that the projects related to public transportation systems were hidden from the public.

Kocaer, Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), Izmir Provincial Coordination Board members with a press release at the entrance of Kemeraltı, a more environmentally friendly and reducing the use of cars in the city, which is a public transportation project, said the tram was late in the implementation.

Stating that it has become impossible for such applications with a large impact area to provide maximum benefit in terms of both the determination of the route and the transportation planning, Kocaer emphasized that they suspect that the project is "carried out unplanned and unscheduled".
"No information sharing, the project is hidden from the public"

He said that they follow the issue of determining the tram route in the press, the needs and ideas of the people of Izmir during the project phase is ignored Kocaer, said:

“A participatory approach was not taken in the project on the city's agenda. Detailed examination reports and suggestions prepared by our professional associations in line with the information they obtained with limited means were conveyed to the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which is running the project, and the project was requested to be revised by taking the suggestions into consideration.

On the other hand, as in the period from the beginning of the tram project to the development process, information is not shared with the relevant circles, but the insistence on not showing a participatory approach is maintained. It is necessary for the city administrators to adopt the reality that projects directly related to public transportation systems such as the tram cannot reach successful results by hiding from the public, sharing the results of the surveys made only with the citizens living on the route or showing the fancy images produced in the computer environment to the public. We hope that those who manage the city will share these and similar projects with the people of the city who will benefit from the project, as well as the relevant professional organizations and specialist organizations. "

The members of TMMOB İzmir Provincial Coordination Board distributed the leaflets they prepared about the project to the citizens after the announcement.
