A loan agreement was signed between Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBDR) for the purchase of new wagons for the Izmir Metro.

According to the statement made by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, a loan agreement was signed with EBDR for 17 million euros of the tender for the purchase of 85 train sets with 17 wagons on 38,5 December.

The contract was registered between Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoglu and EBDR Municipal Infrastructure Finance Director Jean Patrick Marquet.

At the signing ceremony, Marquet stated that they came back with good memories from Izmir, where they previously came for the new cruise ships loan agreement, and that he believes that the new protocol will further strengthen the cooperation and partnership between the two institutions, and expressed that they are ready to cooperate in other projects in the future.

Kocaoğlu also thanked the EBRD officials for their support.

Credit, 3 years non-refundable

No principal repayment will be made for 3 years for the loan obtained from EBDR. The remaining cost of the metro's 85 wagons is aimed to be covered by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the French Development Agency (AFD), ING Bank (under the MIGA Guarantee) and the municipal budget.

With the new sets to be purchased within the scope of the tender open to national and international investors and the next 10 new wagons, the number of wagons in the Izmir Metro fleet will double and reach 172. The rest of the train sets will be delivered in 26 months after the tender process is completed and the contract is signed.

350 thousand passengers are transported daily in Izmir Metro and 280 thousand passengers in Izmir Suburban System (IZBAN). This figure meets 30 percent of the number of passengers in public transport.
