6 A Long Century Long Bridge To Be Restored

6 Centuries Uzunköprü Will Be Restored: 'Uzunköprü', located on the Ergene River in Edirne's Uzunköprü district and considered the longest stone bridge in the world, is undergoing a 3-year restoration process.
General Directorate of Highways pressed the button for the restoration of the longest stone bridge in the world. The project will be completed with the approval of the Board of Monuments, and the bridge will be closed to traffic after the restoration process and will be served by tourism.
Uzunköprü Mayor Av. Enis İşbilen stated that there were cracks in the historical bridge with 392 arches with a length of 174 meters and said: “For many years, vehicles with very heavy tonnages have passed and damaged the bridge. Vehicles no more than 3 tons in weight are no longer allowed to pass. General Directorate of Highways has prepared the project of the bridge. Restoration work will begin after the tender process. ”
It is known that the bridge, which was established to cross the Ergene River, which was confronted by the Ottomans as a natural obstacle in the conquests of the Balkans, enabled the Turkish army to continue its raids in winter. The bridge, which was last repaired in 1963, is aimed to be restored and extended.
