A tender will be held on Wednesday, September 25 for the major restoration and structural reinforcement of the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges, where slanting ropes will be made vertically.

The tender will be open to all domestic and foreign bidders. The offers can be delivered by hand to the General Directorate of Highways until the tender date and time.

Bidders will bid on a turnkey lump sum. The bidders will provide a bid bond to be determined by themselves, not less than 3 percent of the price they offer. The validity period of the submitted bids will be 180 days from the date of the auction. As a consortium, the tender cannot be submitted.

Maintenance, Repair and Structural Reinforcement Project Engineering and Consultancy Services of the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges, carried out by the American Parsons company, which envisages the replacement of the Bosphorus Bridge suspension ropes, was completed on April 26. The tender for the construction work of the Maintenance, Repair, Structural Reinforcement and suspension rope replacement works of the bridges will be held on 25 September.

Due to the 40th anniversary of the Bosphorus Bridge's commissioning, heavy maintenance work will begin after the tender. Major maintenance, repair, structural reinforcement and suspension rope replacement works on the bridge will be completed in 2014. 236 ropes will be replaced within the scope of these works. The renewed ropes will be able to carry more load and have a long service life. The cross ropes used in the initial design of the Bosphorus Bridge to reduce the effects of the bridge sway will be made vertical during the 40th year maintenance.

The most advanced technology products used in the world will be used in the maintenance works of the Bosphorus Bridge, which came into service in 1973. After the 40th year maintenance work, the bridge is expected to serve at least 40 more years. The state-of-the-art dehumidification system used in Japan will be installed in the main ropes and anchorage blocks in the bridges of the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet. Dry ropes will be prevented from rotting with the system.

Bosphorus Bridge will not be closed during the daytime hours except during the maintenance and repair works. The traffic will not be completely closed during the replacement of the suspension ropes. During the connections of the cables to the deck, these lines will be closed by closing one strip at the edge during the night when the traffic is minimized. The edge strips on the suspension ropes side of the bridge will be closed to traffic between the 22.00 and 06.00 hours in terms of life and property safety. 10 solid special pre-tensioning steel will be used for the steel used in construction.

As part of the work to be done, the electrical equipment on the Bosphorus Bridge will be changed. The suspension ropes of the bridge will be made vertical. Insulators between the deck and the towers, energy-absorbing dampers will be placed on the bridge piers to prevent damage to the bridge during swinging or earthquakes. Tower elevators and electrification systems that have been in service for 40 years will be renewed.
