Traffic Quits first Trambus Malatya in Turkey
The Municipality of Malatya's Trambus Project is being implemented with discussions.

The problem of urban transportation in our country is also discussed in cities outside of Istanbul.

While metro projects with high passenger capacity are preferred in our metropolitan-scale cities Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. In cities such as Antalya, Bursa, Eskişehir, Konya and Kayseri, which are not at the size of a metropolitan, transportation systems such as light rail system (LRT) and tramway are preferred.

In Malatya, which will gain metropolitan status after the next local elections, it was decided to use the system called trambus as a result of the search for public transportation. A modernized definition of trolleybus is made for trambus. The tram project, which has been on the agenda for the last 10 years in Malatya, was abandoned due to high investment costs. As a result of the tender organized by the Malatya Municipality on April 22, 2013, 10 vehicles were purchased for the Trambus Project. The system, in which wheeled and electric vehicles will be used, will work on the east-west axis of the city. It is planned to carry 8-10 thousand passengers per hour in one direction with double articulated trams. Vehicles with electric motors have zero emissions and provide 75% fuel savings compared to diesel engines. There are battery systems in vehicles that will be activated in case of power outages.

The project brought heated discussions in Malatya. The mayor Ahmet Çakır, who defends that this system is an outdated trolleybus system, said, “When we evaluate the same route today, the amount you will invest in the infrastructure in the rail system reaches 150-200 million TL. The system we have prepared now is important in terms of cost and efficient use of resources. In addition, it can respond to the passengers we will carry. There is a general criticism, these are normal. We examined this system in developed cities in Europe. Of course, not only by getting on the vehicles, we have thoroughly examined the system and received information. " answered in the form. Within the scope of the project, officials of Malatya Municipality examined similar systems in Milan, Italy and Zurich, Switzerland.

TRAMBUS project will take place for the first time in Turkey, Malatya, Sakarya, Sivas, Kahramanmaras, Kutahya and Izmit local governments are following closely. If the project is successful, we can see trambuses in many cities in Anatolia.

Malatya Municipality's animated video-supported video shows how the trambus will progress in Malatya city traffic.
