Local signaling will save 2 billion TL. Close to 80 percent of the railways in Turkey, indicating that the situation of a signaling Prof. Dr. Mehmet Turan Söylemez stated that the signaling system is essential for a safe and comfortable journey on railways.

The domestic signaling project on the railway has come to an end. The Republic of Turkey State Railways (TCDD), Turkey Scientific and Technological Research Council of Information Security Advanced Technology Research Center (TUBITAK-WISE) and Istanbul Technical University (ITU) cooperation with the native signaling projects actively involved in the project, the details of ITU Electrical and Electronics Faculty Deputy Dean Professor Dr. We asked M. Turan Söylemez.

IT NEED TO IMPORT THE TOPIC TO PROVIDE ESSENTIALS IN RAILWAYS

When did the signaling project begin?

The basis of this project dates back to quite a long time. The idea of the project came out as 2006-2007. Our collaboration with TÜBİTAK-BİLGEM started on 15 June 2009. This is a KAMAG 1007 (TÜBİTAK-Public Institutions Research and Development Projects Support Program) project. In such projects, an institution of the state is needed, and research institutions, universities or private institutions, in addition, come together to solve this problem. Here, the main need of TCDD was the production of the domestic signaling system. The reason for this is: In the coming years, the state plans to transfer an important resource to the railways. When you spend so much resources in the sector, you need to think about where we can earn the most. This occurs in the parts (signalization, electrification) where there is more information that we call superstructure. In fact, you are purchasing information with a significant part of the money you spend on such matters. Signalization projects are a good example. It was extremely important to have an accumulation of knowledge in our country about signalization. Therefore, before the project, let alone designing about signaling, there were almost no people to follow these works.

How many people do the team that make up the project including ITU?

There is a team of 20-25 people on the ITU side. There is a similar team on the side of TÜBİTAK-BİLGEM. There were changes in the 2-year period. This number sometimes decreased, sometimes increased. A team of 40 to 50 people worked in this project. I was the executive of the project at ITU.

What is the cost of the system?

The budget of this project is approximately 4.5 million liras. Nearly 90 percent of this was used. Especially in the railway sector, there is an important added value in the fields such as informatics and communication. If you cannot produce and import anything, you get it at a price of 10 times the cost of that thing. Naturally, there will be a very serious profit. Turkey's only direct income to be earned from this project will be about 2 billion pounds.

Project 1 is being tried in Adapazarı-Mithatpaşa station for years. Which line was selected for the next application?

The system is currently installed in Adapazarı. Apart from that, this project will be implemented at different stations along a 300 km line in the Afyon region.

“WE WERE ÖZGÜVEN”

What advantages will the project provide to the railway sector?

Its direct advantage is the establishment of a national railway signaling system. In this way, now it is at the basis of the signaling system that we need Turkey in the four corners of the state can do on our own. Close to 80 percent of the railways in Turkey Sinyalsiz case. This carries a serious risk in terms of security and prevents us from using our existing lines effectively. If we want to travel more comfortably and safely on railways, signaling is a must. But not only this. I think the project has a much more important side effect. He is also; Providing ourselves with self-confidence with increasing awareness in our country about related issues such as safe system design. Because about 50 people worked in this project, and 2-3 years ago, there was no one who knew the right job on this issue, and now we have a human resource that knows this important number and can work on this job. Some of these friends will turn to other sectors. But some of them will continue to work within the sector. The project will allow many new projects to be developed both to install the signaling systems comfortably and to develop further steps, more modern form, and more.

Did you get support from foreign companies or institutions when developing this project?

There was no direct support from foreign companies during the project. However, some of the equipment we used in the project was from foreign origin. He became the companies and universities that we worked abroad for.

You said signaling system will be extended to all railways in Turkey, this happens every few years?

This is totally dependent on the state's attitude. If there is an insistence on this issue, if the information obtained during the project is transferred to domestic companies, 5-10 will not be disseminated during the year. Because during the project, not only one station but a rather general solution was produced. Rapid expansion of the project will be achieved.

What other work do you have on the railway?

My work on railways is not only limited to signaling, but I also work on the electrification side. One of the subjects I especially work with is the simulation of the dimensioning and optimization of the draw frame system. As far as traction power in Turkey, no one who works in the simulation. Especially when you try to install a rail system in a city, you must first dimension this electrical system in order to make electrification. There are a number of critical questions here. Where will the substations be? What electrical system should I use? What will be the power of substations? What will be the basic protection system parameters? What should be the cross sections of the cables I will use here? How should I size this system? How should I operate a rail system installed or to be installed in terms of energy efficiency? In order to answer all these questions, you need to do a very serious simulation study. On one side, trains move according to certain physics rules. You have to consider this. But on the other hand, there is an electricity grid spread over kilometers. You have to simulate it by following how this electrical network works. These two components I said are connected in some way. Naturally, simulating railway systems is not an easy task.

Or, does ITU have other railway related projects?

There are different projects involving ITU. One of them is the national rail system vehicle project as far as I follow. The development of our own national rail system is an important project. There will be a locomotive style and a vehicle production that can be used directly in the main lines and this will take place in ITU.

Adapazarı-Mithatpaşa model system

The model of the Adapazarı-Mithatpaşa station, which has been reduced by 87 in 1, is installed in the Industrial Automation Laboratory in the Control Engineering Department of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of ITU. The system, which took 1.5 years to build, was established as a result of the collaboration between the faculty members of the Control Engineering Department and the faculty members of the Computer Engineering Department of the Computer and Informatics Faculty. The model system, which is entirely from Germany, has been modified and systems called rail circuit, which are especially suitable under the rails, have been created. The signals were made using local sources in accordance with the Turkish system. There are approximately 2 thousand signals in the system. This corresponds to a medium-sized factory. The cables used in the system established on an area of approximately 100 square meters are approximately 150 kilometers long.
