The Paris subway cuts its energy consumption in half with Philips' LED lighting solutions.

Philips and French professional lighting company Step will illuminate the Paris subway system with energy efficient LEDs. Within the scope of the tender, 5 thousand lighting points in 302 metro stations and 66 RER stations of RATP, the world's 250th largest transportation enterprise, will be replaced with LED lighting and energy use will be reduced by more than 50 percent.
Paris, France - Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) announced that it has signed a multi-year contract with the French professional lighting firm Step for lighting the Paris metro system with energy efficient LED lighting solutions. The switch to LED will reduce the energy required for lighting the Paris subway and RER suburban stations by more than 50% while improving the light quality. The contract was awarded by Paris transport firm Groupe RATP to cover more than 85% of the metro and RER stations in the French capital.
With this project, Philips will work with RATP to achieve its goal of becoming the world's first transportation network, whose stations are fully equipped with LED lighting. Within the scope of the tender, 302 lighting points at RATP's 66 metro stations and 250.000 RER stations will be replaced with energy efficient LED lighting.
RATP aims to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 2004% from 2020 to 15. Energy efficient LED lighting systems from Philips and Step help achieve this goal. The amount of electricity currently consumed by RATP stations accounts for about 12% of total energy consumption.
With 12 million passengers traveling every day in and around Paris, RATP is the world's 5th largest urban transport business. It is among the largest in the world with its multimodal network in the city center and suburbs, consisting of 14 metro lines, two RER lines (A and B), three tram lines, 350 bus routes and direct lines to the city's two airports.
