Attracting attention with its investments in railway transportation in Central Asia, Uzbekistan also took its hand in its neighbor Afghanistan.
Uzbekistan Railways (ÖDY), which previously implemented the first railway project in Afghanistan, has now rolled up its sleeves for the second project.
Uzbekistan will build 230 kilometers of railway within the scope of the new project, whose feasibility studies have been completed. The new railway network that will connect Mezar-ı Şerif in the north of the country to the Herat province is planned to be completed in 2013-2015. This project will be Uzbekistan's second railway construction work abroad. The new rail network is expected to cost around $ 450 million.
The 75-kilometer Tirmidhi-Mezarı Şerif railway line, Uzbekistan's first railway project abroad, was completed in 2010. Funded by the Asian Development Bank (AKB), the project cost approximately $ 170 million.
