High Speed Train Line Between France and Italy
French President François Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, signed a controversial Lyon-Torino high-speed train project to implement the 57 kilometer tunnel under the Alpine Mountains.
Hollande said the project would be the symbol of the partnership to be established in many areas:
“We are trying to reach a common point, this partnership is based on jointly carrying out political projects at European level. We are putting forward the Lyon-Turin project within this framework. ”
It is planned that 8.5 billion Euros of the tunnel, which will cost 2,9 billion Euros, will be met from Italy, and the remaining 2,2 percent of 40 billion Euros from France will be covered by the European Union budget.
During the meeting of the two leaders, environmentalist groups took action in Lyon. 12 buses leaving Italy to attend the protests were able to enter Lyon after a long wait at the border.
The project, which will cost 26 billion Euros in total, is criticized by some circles as an unnecessary expenditure during this financial crisis period.
