Great interest from Central Asia to Baku-Tbilisi-Kars transportation project

Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan from Central Asia aim to use the transit potential of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line with their own transportation facilities. These countries, with the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project will be opened to the world markets via Turkey and the Caucasus.

During the official visit of Uzbekistan President Islam Kerimov to Turkmenistan on 1-2 October, cooperation opportunities in the transportation sector were also evaluated. Negotiating the cooperation in the transportation sector with Turkmenistan President Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedov, Uzbek leader Kerimov noted that he has to use the border of at least 3 countries in order for his country to reach international markets.

Berdimuhamedov and Kerimov signed a joint statement as a result of their meeting in Ashgabat. The leaders' joint statement stated that an agreement was reached to increase cooperation in the transportation sector. In the declaration, it was pointed out that the realization of the Nevai-Türkmenbaşı-Baku-Tbilisi-Kars transportation project is important in terms of reaching international markets.

It aims to open up to the world market with Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, Central Asia-China and Central Asia-Europe transportation projects. The Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway project initiated by Turkmenistan will also allow these countries to open up to the Persian Gulf.
