Burhan Sakallı, Mayor of Eskişehir Odunpazarı; He made important statements about Eskişehir's future vision and the Station Building. President Sakallı gave the following views in his written statement;
“Eskişehir should focus on developing a strategic vision towards becoming a world city. It should create a road map extending from today to the future. One of the prerequisites for this is that our city administrators meet on a democratic platform of sharing and debate. Short-term political calculations should go beyond rematch or vicious stubbornness. For example, issues such as the Station Building and the stadium could not be handled on such a ground. It is very wrong to limit such issues to the technical level. Of course, technical details are important. However, what is more important is to realize a part of the vision of Eskişehir's future.
Eskişehir has been talking about where to build the new railway station for a long time. As if it was the end of the world, making it a hundred meters forward or two hundred meters back.
I think we don't want to talk about the real issues, so we like to keep the artificial agendas we've produced. There is a lot to talk about the new garage.
For example, the new station building must be one of the symbol buildings of Eskişehir. We should talk about what we can do to build a building that will register Eskişehir as the capital of railways.
After the high-speed train services started, the demand for railway transportation increased slightly, and the city started to become insurmountable during the train arrival times. Because there was no integration of existing railway station into public transport system. Under normal conditions, the streets which were already under load were unable to carry the additional load on the train arrival times. We should already consider measures to prevent similar traffic problems in the new gar building.
There are many issues we need to discuss about the new station building. We also need to think about what to do and how to evaluate the existing station. We must find ways to evaluate the building, which has served Eskişehir for many years, in a way that will contribute to the memory of the city.
Eskişehir owes a lot to railways. Thanks to the railways, it developed rapidly in the last period of the Ottoman Empire and the first period of the Republic. If we live in a modern city today, we cannot deny the share of railways. Railway and Station building cannot be limited to only transportation. In terms of tourism, it is extremely important for the expression of urban identity. So where are these in these discussions? Eskişehir needs meetings, not stubbornness, and common goals in its future strategies.
For this, we must be able to argue civilized, like the people of a modern city. "We need to turn the problems into one-dimensional technical problems and stop doing some kind of arm wrestling," he said.
