The "Mersin Railway Modernization", which was designed within the scope of the EU acquis and started to be built with a 118 million euro loan from the World Bank, was stuck in the embarrassing obstacle.
The 'electrification-signaling' cables, the lifeblood of the project, were looted by child thieves. The children, who cut meters of cable, most of which were buried under the ground, sold the metals inside to the scrap dealers.

Italian Ansaldo STS, who undertook the production, warned that "the project is at risk" due to the unabated theft. Mersin Governorship also asked for help from public institutions and organizations near the railway and the private sector.
The letter was sent by Deputy Governor Turgut Serimer. The importance of the project was explained, theft caused the loss of reputation of the country in the international arena and the World Bank.
