Upon the application of TCDD to the Turkish Patent Institute, the name of YHT and its usage form were registered as a trademark. The registration process was published in the Institute's Official Trademark Bulletin.

With the name becoming a brand, no company other than TCDD will be able to use YHT anymore. After the liberalization of the railway sector, many private companies are expected to enter the sector. If these companies also operate trains, those trains will have a different name. Before starting YHT flights, the names of Turkish Star, Turquoise, Snowdrop, YHT, Çelik Wing and Yıldırım received the most votes in the survey conducted on the internet for train names in 2009. Binali Yıldırım, Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, chose the name YHT from the names of YHT and Yıldırım, who made it to the finals.
