Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, and European-based locomotive rental company Akiem has signed a framework contract for 100 Traxx Universal multi-system (MS3) locomotives. There are 65 locomotives under part of the contract. The total amount of framework agreements reaches up to 500 million euros. While confirming its leadership in the European rental market, Akiem confirmed its aim to contribute to the accelerating activities of the rail market with major investments in lines from France to 12 other European countries.
Traxx Multi-system locomotives benefit from optimized energy consumption and can handle both Freight and Passenger operations at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. These locomotives will be operated in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia. As a unique feature for multi-system locomotives, some will be delivered with last mile capability and ports, terminals or industrial areas will be accessible without the need for a shunting locomotive.
All locomotives will be equipped with ATLAS, Alstom's carrier solution for the European Train Control System (ETCS). This system has a wide country and line coverage for both ETCS and existing system operation and has a superior two-triple architecture.
Kevin Cogo, Head of Rolling Stock, Locomotives and Components, Alstom DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) said: “We are proud that Akiem has expanded its locomotives fleet with the largest single order of Traxx locomotives for a significant number of countries. “Through this agreement, both Akiem and Alstom will consolidate their strong positions for locomotives on various lines, including their home market.”

These investments will allow us to offer new efficient and sustainable lines that will contribute to increasing the transition to rail transport in Europe. As part of this order, 55 locomotives will be diverted from France to Europe at a time of lack of delivery over the past decade. With the support of our maintenance and service teams, we aim to contribute to the renewal of rail freight and intercity passenger transport in France and to facilitate innovation and competition.”
Final assembly will take place at the Alstom facilities in Kassel, Germany. Delivery of the units is planned between 2025 and 2028.
