Philippines, Iloilo Monorail Pre-Feasibility Study Signed

On 22 Aug 2017 Iloilo City Council approved plans for a pre-feasibility study for a proposed monorail system. The Sangguniang Panlungsod (City Council) authorized Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog to sign a Memorandum of Understanding and a Non-Disclosure Agreement for the project with Chinese company BYD Auto Industry Company Limited.

A large BYD delegation including General Manager Liu Xueliang and Senior Regional Manager Benjamin Zhao presented the company profile and the proposed monorail system to the Council. The Mayor and BYD representatives then signed the MOU in an evening ceremony.

BYD will fund the pre-feasibility study and complete it in two months. The proposed 20 km long driverless monorail system would run from the city to Iloilo Airport in Cabatuan.

Only in October 2016 BYD’s first 4.4 km long ‘SkyRail’ monorail system debuted at BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen (China).

Named one of “China’s Most Admired Companies” by Fortune China in 2016, BYD has been committed to driving forward green mobility to help address the challenges of traffic congestion.

The City of Iloilo is a highly urbanized city located on the southeastern tip of Panay Island, in the Philippines. It has a population of approximately 500,000 citizens, roughly one million in the metropolitan area. The city was the last capital of the Spanish empire in Asia before the Philippines was ceded by Spain to the United States in 1898.

Within the city limits Iloilo is served mostly by passenger jeepneys, white metered taxis and tricycles. Jeepneys are also the main public means of transportation to Metropolitan areas.
