The consortium will be responsible for the design, manufacture, supply, delivery, installation, testing and commissioning of 42 six-car trains for the project.

A total of five consortia had pre-qualified for the tender in May 2016, with only the winning consortium submitting its bid before tenders closed in November 2016.

The other four consortia that had pre-qualified but did not submit bids are:

1.Hyundai Rotem Company and Apex Communications Sdn Bhd
2.Alstom Transport SA and SMH Rail Sdn Bhd
3.CAF and Labuan Shipyard Sdn Bhd
4.Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Sumitomo Corp.

LRT3 is a double track rail alignment of approximately 37 km operating between Bandar Utama and Johan Setia. The alignment will have 26 stations, including 5 stations that integrate with existing and future public transport systems. The line will cover the areas of Bandar Utama, Shah Alam and Klang before terminating at Johan Setia. Trains will run automatically using a driverless system, at a maximum speed of 80km/h; total transit time will be approximately 58 minutes.

This is the third LRT system in the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley (GKL/KV) region and will serve an estimated population of two million in the Western Corridor by 2020.

The LRT3 is estimated to benefit 500,000 commuters along the alignment. The LRT3 project is developed in line with the Urban Rail Development Plan (URDP) of the GKL/KV Land Public Transport Master Plan under the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

Prasarana is the project owner and will assume operations of the project upon completion.

CRRC Zhuzhou has invested heavily in Malaysia to establish a rolling stock assembly and maintenance, repair and overhaul facility in Batu Gajah.

MRCB George Kent is the appointed Project Delivery Partner (PDP) for the LRT3 and is responsible for the successful completion of the project within a predetermined cost and time frame.

Systra has provided preliminary designs for the project. WCT Bhd is constructing the Johan Setia Depot.
