Saudi’s North-South railway to open next year

Saudi’s North-South railway to open next year :Saudi Arabia’s North-South railway project is expected to launch early next year, Riyadh governor Prince Faisal bin Bandar has said.

The North-South Railway Line is a 1,250 kilometre-long project under construction by Saudi Railway Company.

It will start in Riyadh and pass through Al Majma’ah, Qasim, Hail and Jouf before reaching Al Qurayyat. The train will have 12 carriages.

Prince Faisal told local media during a trial run from Riyadh to Al Majma’ah last week: “We expect the train will officially operate within two to three months, at the beginning of 2017.”

According to Arab News, Prince Faisal said that economic and security feasibility tests had been conducted and the new line would be a “huge success” when it opens next year.

The railway is expected to cut road accidents by reducing the number of cars on the roads, and it is also expected to increase jobs for Saudi nationals.

He was quoted as saying: “We are proud of our young Saudis who will drive this train. SAR has worked from the beginning to send Saudi citizens abroad to learn how to operate the train.”
