Midland Metro Trams Will Be Catenary-Free: West Midlands Transport Authority Centro announced on February 12 that 21 CAF Urbos 3 trams used on the Midland Metro light rail line are to be retrofitted with batteries to enable catenary-free operation. And four more catenary-free trams ordered for using on the lines. All 21 trams of the current fleet, and four additional units on order, will be fitted with batteries, which allow the trams to operate for short periods without power from overhead lines.

Centro said, in the city four more line will allow catenary-free running. Centro estimated the saving just from catenary-free operation on these four sections is £650,000, but longer term there will be greater savings. The batteries will be fitted on the tram roof and will be recharged from the overhead lines along other parts of the route.
