Haramain railway to replace pilgrim buses in 2016 :The Haramain high-speed railway is set to replace buses as the main form of transport for pilgrims traveling between Mecca and Madinah by December 2016, local media reports.
There will be 35 trains operational by next year to serve more than 2 million pilgrims, with each train expected to have 15 carriages and three first class carriages, according to Saudiâ€™s Arab News.
An official told local news sources that stations in Makkah and Jeddah are almost complete with testing commencing in the Madinah and Rabigh’s King Abdullah Economic City stations.
“The Haramain trains will travel at a speed of more than 300 km/h. A trip between Jeddah and Makkah will take only half an hour, while one between Jeddah and Madinah will take about 2 hours,” said an official.
The Haramain railway will also consist of the construction of a training centre in Dammam at a cost of about $8 billion.
