Abu Dhabi to Al Ain Hyperloop System Feasibility Study Announced

Abu Dhabi to Al Ain Hyperloop System Feasibility Study Announced :On 12 December 2016 Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport (DMAT) announced an agreement with Hyperloop Transportation Technologies to undertake a feasibility study to connect Abu Dhabi and Al Ain with a Hyperloop system.

Another feasibility study is already being conducted by rivals Hyperloop One with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, for connecting Dubai and Abu Dhabi using similar technology.

Hyperloop is a passenger and freight transportation system that propels a pod-like vehicle through a near-vacuum tube at great speeds. The tubes can go above ground on columns or underground, eliminating the dangers of grade crossings and the costs of land acquisition.
The news follows a 6 December 2016 statement made by HyperloopTT Chairman and CEO Bibop Gabriele Gresta that the US-based company has submitted a proposal to link the Indian cities of Mumbai and Pune.

Eng. Khalid Mohamed Hashim, Acting Executive Director of DMAT’s Land Transport Sector stated: “We hope to take advantage of this technology to connect the cities of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, which will result in a travel time of about eight to twelve minutes.”

He added: “The reinforcement of connectivity between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain is one of the strategic objectives of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, aiming to stimulate economic, social and touristic development between Al Ain and its suburbs and the capital city.”

According to the official statement released by HyperloopTT “the study agreement details a multi-phase rollout that includes route analysis, feasibility studies, and a cost estimate and development schedule which will be determined over the next few months. Once these analyses are successfully completed, both DMAT and HyperloopTT will discuss further steps.”

Bibop G. Gresta stated: “We are pleased to cooperate with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport to conduct a study on high speed travel between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. By leveraging a global team of experts and professionals, we are working to achieve a technical breakthrough in the field of transportation in Abu Dhabi.”
The Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport was formed in November 2016, pursuant to a law issued by HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, thus replacing the Department of Municipal Affairs and Department of Transport.
