Underwater tunnel between North Wales and Ireland ‘could be built by end of century :Leading transport think tank, The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Cymru Wales, is calling for the move as a vision for the future

An underwater tunnel linking Wales to Ireland could become a major European transport corridor, according to a leading transport think tank.

But the cost of such a project could be too expensive to ever become a reality.

Similar to the Channel Tunnel, the group has called for a new route to run between Holyhead and Dublin.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Cymru Wales says the new route would cost around £15bn and could be ready by the end of the century.

Set out in the think tank’s last report, Vision 2035: Cymru Wales, it also says electrified railways could cut train journeys from Cardiff to London to under an hour, and that metro style systems and innovative transport technology could all become commonplace in Wales in the next 20 years.

It says that by 2035, Wales will be making decisions on all aspects of transport, including air passenger duty, rail franchising and road policy.

And it predicts that Cardiff Airport will be handling around 4.5 million passengers, with a range of long and short haul destinations.

It adds: “There will also be greater government involvement in public transport operations, with not-for-profit business models being adopted.

“There will be significant enhancements in the transport network, with electrification on all major rail routes. Some additional road capacity will be provided, but driverless vehicles will improve road network capacity.”

But the Irish government is reported to have dismissed the idea of an underwater tunnel stating that the costs of such a project would be too much.

“As an essential part of the economy, it is hoped Vision 2035 provides a long term view of transport in Wales,” said Dr Andrew Potter, Chair of CILT Cymru Wales.

“By thinking now about the opportunities and challenges ahead, better solutions can be found that make a real difference to passengers and businesses alike.
