The purpose in constructing this tunnel is to protect and preserve the nature of the Alp Mountains as well as ensuring road safety, by removing heavy load freight trucks from road. . The idea of such a tunnel being first brought up in 1940’s was then approved by the people of Switzerland with a series of referendums held 20 years.
