Turkey : IZMIR secures financing from AFD for its 2 new tram lines .IZMIR Metropolitan Municipality has signed a €165m financing agreement with AFD (Agence Française de Développement), IFC (International Financial Corporation, World Bank Group) and Dutch banking group ING for the construction of two new light rail lines, which will serve the districts of Konak and Karsiyaka.

The Karsiyaka line will be 16.6km long with 19 stations, while the 9.7km Konak line will have 16 stations. The new lines will replace current bus lines serving these routes along the Izmir bay and are part of the bi-decennial (2010-2030) metropolitan plan for sustainable development. The objective is both to relieve the bus network and to improve accessibility from peripheral areas to the historical center of Izmir with a sustainable mode of transport.

A total of 38 LRVs will be required to operate services on the two lines.

A public tender was issued in Q1 2014 by the Metropolitan Municipality of Izmir to procure infrastructure and rolling stock.
