Turkey dismisses media report on suspension of BTK railway’s construction :The media report about the suspension of construction works for creation of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway is not true, a source in the Turkish Transport, Maritime and Communication Ministry told Trend Nov. 17.

“Detailed information on the matter will be provided in the days to come,” the source said.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is being constructed on the basis of the Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement.

The State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ) finances the project in accordance with the Azerbaijani president’s decree ‘On the implementation of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project activities’, dated Feb. 21, 2007.

A new 105-kilometer branch of the railroad is being constructed as part of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project.

Aside from that, the railway’s Akhalkalaki-Marabda-Tbilisi section is under reconstruction in Georgia. This will increase the railway’s capacity to 15 million metric tons of cargo per year.

A station is being constructed in the Georgian town of Akhalkalaki for further switching trains from the tracks in Georgia to the European ones.

The project is planned to be completed in 2015.

The corridor’s peak capacity will be 17 million metric tons of cargo per year.
